(C) Ambassador raised reftel request for El Salvador to
assist in resettlement of Chinese Uighur detainees currently
held at Guantanamo during a July 12 meeting met with Acting
Foreign Minister Eduardo Calix. DCM raised the issue in a
separate encounter later that day with MFA Director of
Foreign Policy Ambassador Guillermo Melendez, the MFA,s
third-ranking official. DCM then met with both Calix and
Melendez on July 17 for a more detailed discussion. During
that meeting, Calix said that he would circulate the US
request to other Salvadoran authorities, but added that he
doubted that El Salvador would be able to resettle any of the
Uighur currently in Guantanamo.
